BIOGRAPHIES OF THE COMMISSIONER, CURATORS AND THE ARTISTIS
Sylvia Irrazábal
Commissioner
Cultural Secretary of IILA since 2011, Lawyer and Doctor in Law and Social Sciences at the R.O.U University of Uruguay, Master of “Alti Studi Europei” at the Alcide De Gasperi Institute in Rome, she was born in Montevideo and she fulfilled several offices in her country and abroad in the field of legal and political science and cultural management.
From 1997 to 2011 she’s been Cultural Attaché at the Uruguayan Embassy in Italy and she organized and managed many cultural events, among others: Uruguay Pavilion at the International Art Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia from 2003 to 2011 and at the International Architecture Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia from 2006 to 2010. In 2013 she was the Commissioner of the Pavilion of Latin American – IILA at the 55th International Art Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia. She authored several articles and researches about political, economic and socio-cultural integration.
Alfons Hug
Curator
He was Curator of the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (House of World Cultures) in Berlin between 1994 and 1998; Chief Curator of the São Paulo Biennial in 2002 and 2004; Curator of the Brazilian Pavilion at the International Art Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia in 2003 and 2005; Chief Curator of the Biennial of the End of the World in Ushuaia, Argentina in 2009; chief curator the 6th Curitiba Bienal; and Curator of the IILA-Latin American Pavilion at the 54th and 55th International Art Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia (2011 and 2013), among other curatorial projects. He was director of the Goethe-Institut in Lagos (Nigeria), Medellin (Colombia), Caracas (Venezuela), Moscow (Russia) and Brasília (Brazil). Since 2002 he has been director of the Goethe-Institut in Rio de Janeiro. Hug also curated the Montevideo Biennial in 2012 and 2104.
Alberto Saraiva
Deputy curator
Is curator at the media arts center Oi Futuro in Rio de Janeiro. Saraiva was co-curator of the Bienal del Fin del Mundo in Ushuaia (2009), co-curator in the Curitiba Biennial (2011) as well as curator of the artwork of the artist Neville D’Almeida (Brazil) within the IILA – Latin American Pavilion at the 54th International Art Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia (2011).
